7 Tips for Online Marketing Managers (partners)

by Garrick Jones

Although I am quite new to the world that is eMarketing, the environment here at Quirk is pretty fast-paced and you find yourself being exposed to quite a lot in a short period of time. Having found myself move towards the client service side of happenings here, I have picked up and learnt a number of things from the more experienced guys and my own personal experiences. So here are my 7 tips for online marketing managers or partners.

  1. Read and learn as much as you can about a client before you meet them and really listen and make sure you understand what they want before you leave the meeting. You need to know what it's all about.
  1. Try and put yourself in their shoes. This follows from the previous point.
  1. Explain the technical stuff as simply as possible and ask the techies the simple questions that the client may feel too embarrassed to. This said, try and share what you know with them – some account managers like to keep the client dependent, I'm an advocate of helping them in order to help yourself.
  1. Make sure everything is in writing (read: inbox). Again, make sure everything is in writing. This covers both you and the client should there be disputes in the future.
  1. Be available and keep them posted. Make sure they have all your contact details and that you let them know how things are going from time to time rather than sending a mass of information after long periods of time.
  1. Keep an eye on the budget. Do you like it when you give someone more money than you wanted and they come back asking for more? ‘Nuff said.
  1. Do more than the minimum. Keep the client in mind and get creative. They may not always use the ideas you take to them outside of the originally discussed plan, but they will appreciate them.

There are probably more items that could be included in this list, but let's deal with the basics first. Getting these right can help ensure that an extended relationship is built rather than managing a project.

Happy clients mean more business. If it can be shown that you've gone above and beyond, you will get recognised for this. Now that I've reached the end, I've realised that you can replace 'client' with 'girlfriend/boyfriend', especially number 4 and 5. I won't go further into number 3...

That's it; I'm going to become an agony aunt for You Magazine :)
