Have a very online Xmas...
by Lachlan McArthur
According to
this article by Sky News, more British shoppers than ever are
turning to the internet to buy Xmas gifts.
Now I am fairly typical in the sense that I am doing more and more of my shopping online, but online stores will have a hard time getting me off the high street for Xmas shopping. The last minute Xmas eve dash around
Harrods has become a personal tradition for me. It would be
so much easier to do my gift shopping online, rather than battle with the crowds and the queues, but it would mean
thinking about presents for loved ones in advance. How on earth am I expected to figure out what to buy my family, if I am not under the huge pressure, that the shops shut down for the holidays in 15 minutes.
So what would it take for me to do my Xmas shopping online? Well I would still need to do it on Xmas eve. In my opinion buying Xmas presents on any other day is just wrong. So
the issue is one of delivery.
In order for this to work, the retailer would have to gift wrap my presents, and somehow get them under the tree by Xmas morning.
Father Xmas online! They will have to use the chimney, as by the time they gift wrap the presents and get to the delivery address, I and the rest of the family will already be a couple of hours into our traditional Xmas eve cognac induced stupor. The delivery guy can wear a Father Xmas outfit just in case the kids wake up, and deliver a real authentic service. Hey there will even be the mince pies and a tumbler of malt whiskey, we left out for the real Father Xmas, for his troubles.
Clearly this wouldn't work in the USA due to the high probability that the delivery guy will get shot. Ok so it probably wouldn't work in the UK either, but
it's a service I would pay for.
I guess it's Harrods again this year!
