Samsung Instinct - Just Another Phone?

by Tammy Joseph

A good captivating TV ad, that cleverly spells out the features of the new Samsung Instinct, which is sure to make you want to sprint online and check it out.  So it’s brilliant for branding – Samsung coming out with yet another great innovation.

As for it being a good viral, I’m not too convinced.   It’s catchy, I won’t deny that, but I think this idea of advertising products as new “movie releases” is a bit old. It’s already been done.  Perhaps I’m not the market it's intended for (I’m not really a phone junkie), so when I see this I think great phone, maybe I’ll go check it out, but its not captivating enough for me to want to tell my mates to check out the commercial (bearing in mind I am female - and phones are not really my thing).  For me it’s just another cell phone commercial.

It is a really cool phone, and because they don’t let out all the features that if offers (just the really slick ones); it urges you to go find out more about it. It brings up the question: if it has those features what else does it have? I can just hear the boys saying “have you checked out the new Samsung?” And if not,  they might send them straight to this video.

So I think, if someone actually watches it, it serves the purpose of getting people to read up on the phone, and perhaps eventually buy it. The ad doesn't, however, really have the viral effect, which will limit  its success. Eventhough it costs nothing to put a  TV ad online, it is perhaps worth considering whether it's always worth doing it anyway.

Samsung Mobile

This viral campaign shows how effective new forms of Marketing are and will be going forward. The clever use of a Movie Trailer to get across the Samsung’s phones great features was very cleverly done. There is so much clutter in traditional media that launching a campaign virally is a great way to get awareness of a new product and spread the word to a large audience. The fact that it was done using a movie trailer will also lead to far greater recall by the consumers and people watching the advert.

I believe that this campaign will do very well for Samsung and Sprint in America.

Thank you for your input Daniel, you have made some valid points.

As i said in my post it does create a great amount of brand awareness and urges people to go find out more about the product;

I do still think that because its a concept that has already been covered by many advertisers its success may be limited virally.
