Even far down here, in a place many American’s couldn’t pinpoint on a map, we South Africans have been following the US election build-up feverishly. GottaQuirk has been a-hopping with Clinton-Obama-McCain virals for months now (and it really shouldn’t be any surprise - a forgiving wife, an attractive young black man and an old rich white man - the basis for many a soap opera). Everyone seems to be getting onboard with this election race - remember the celebrity-filled “Yes We Can” Obama viral? Call the American population simply Bushwhacked or finally ready for a significant change, this election is the most followed yet and luckily for us viral junkies, one of the most controversial.
One of the major problems in American politics today is getting people to actually get out there and vote. According to the US Census Bureau, of the 197 million eligible voters in America in 2004, only 125, 7 million actually voted - a low 63%. Of the youth (18-24) only 41% of those eligible actually voted - the lowest percentage of all the age groups. Campaigning to get the youth involved has since been the main focus for many in this election - and one of the best ways to do this is online, with a little controversy thrown in.
I’m Voting Republican is a blatant pro-Democrat pitch, basically aiming to scare the c**p out of apathetic liberals. By telling us what life could be like under the conservative Republicans, the video is a blatant attempt, not only to discredit the opposition, but to force people into action. If the idea that “the government should be the one to tell us who to love” doesn’t get an 18 year old’s attention - nothing will.
The accompanying website doesn’t just leave you hanging and offers a load of information to drive its message home. Each claim in the movie is explained through (an interpretation) of Republican policy and then countered with the Democratic response. Resources to get more informed about American issues are offered - and they aren’t stuffy PDFs, but fashionable DVDs and cool books with titles like “Making Friends with Black People”. You can also link through to Rock the Vote, the site that aims to encourage the youth to vote, through the use of celebrities and a quick and easy online voter registration option.
I’m Voting Republican is currently number 20 on Unruly Media Viral Video chart and since its discovery on the 11th of June has had nearly 2,8 million views. While the clip is only rated as “spreading at a fairly constant rate” the comments it is receiving on YouTube prove that it has indeed hit a nerve. People are arguing about everything from Obama’s religious background to McCain’s Vietnam War heroism and the real root of 9/11. Many of these 16 000 comments may not be that constructive, but they are getting young people talking and hopefully angry enough to go and have their say and vote.
