Firefox 3 Add-ons: Extend Your Browsing Reach

by Damian Burke

Millions of users made the switch to Firefox 3 when the official version was released recently (reportedly 8,249,092 downloads on the first day) - many upgrading from Firefox 2, while a large percentage made the switch from Microsoft’s constricting Internet Explorer to the latest version of the open source browser by Mozilla.

So now you have Firefox up and running, now it’s time to think outside the box with the heaps of add-ons and extensions available for the latest version.

Here’s a run down of a few I have looked into:

SearchStatus 1.25

Our very own Craig Raw has done it again by updating the celebrated SearchStatus to be compatible with Firefox 3.

At a glance review Google page rank, Alexa information, keyword densities, link information and many more useful tools. Read Craig’s piece on Firefox 3.

ForecastFox 0.9.7.6

Receive regular weather updates from AccuWeather.com in your browser. Even though I have a perfectly good view of the weather outside from my window at the QuirkStation, it makes me happy when I see the three days of sun ForecastFox has predicted and displayed in the bottom left corner of my window on the world.

Feed Sidebar 2.2.2

Yep, you guessed it. This handy little tool creates a sidebar in Firefox to display your choice of RSS feeds - no unnecessary extra features or frills to write home about; the Feed Sidebar does exactly what you want it to.

GooglePreview 3.11

A handy tool for all Google and Yahoo! users, this Firefox 3 add on displays a thumbnail preview of the websites in the search results page - a good reference point.

ColorZilla 2.0

One for the designers and graphic artists out there, ColorZilla works as an advanced eyedropper (simply select colour from anything in your browser), online palette viewer, page zoomer and more.

Total Validator 5.2

This Firefox 3 extension is great for those of us who work with the nuts and bolts of the internet, allowing you to test HTML validation, check for broken links, view multi-browser compatibility screenshots and even check spelling quickly and painlessly.

Get knee deep in the hoopla with your own combination of Firefox 3 extensions.
