So, on which side of the tracks do you optimise?

Growing up in the suburbs, as a kid faced with every day conflicts and problems, one often has those childhood rivalries. We still don’t really know why they existed.

Well, as it may have been, every 11 year old boy was part of some “Gang”, and the leader was always the guy with the coolest, best toys in the group. (I don’t really think that girls ever went through these phases, but then again – what differed from one doll to the other back then?)

Getting back to the story…. I formed part of one of these gangs, in the older part of town. We were a happy bunch of kids, always playing friendly tricks on our neighbours, dressing up in old army uniforms and fighting wars against each other with mud grenades. We were simple kids taking advantage of everything good in life.

Meanwhile, in a different part of town – only a hop and a train track away; the evil little Lego loving brats played out there own games on their Atari 8-bit TV games after having their balanced lunches. They were our mortal enemies on the other side of the train tracks…

So where does the SEO fit into the whole thing. Well, while doing some keyword research the other day, I discovered that there might have been some repercussions from the excess amount of mud I took in the eye. Yes, to my surprise there was a different spelling to the word Airplane.

 This was what I found:

So what do we gather from this?

While the majority of searchers, 307,501 /month, (Probably the cool kids, like me) use the term “Airplane”, there are some, around 12% 37,027, of them (lets call them Robert Charles) that prefer the old British spelling “Aeroplane”.

The Bookliness Quotient

Where this starts getting interesting though, is when we throw books into the mix. Search frequency for the term “Airplane Books”, 28 searches / month, and “Aeroplane Books”, 1,418 searches / month.

If we compare the ratio of “Airplane” searchers vs. “Aeroplane” searchers, giving us the “Bookliness Quotient”; we discover the shocking truth.



The “Aeroplane,” to “Aeroplane books” ratio, and the “Airplane,” to “Airplane books” ratio indicates that for “Aeroplane” our “bookliness quotient” is around 4%, where the ratio for the “bookliness quotient” of “Airplane,” is only 0.00009%.

Thus, indicating that the more “hoity-toity” kids, like our friend Robert Charles, would more than likely tend towards the way of the book.

Lastly, we took the phrase “Paper Airplane”, which showed the complete opposite results; with “Paper Airplane” scoring 7%, and “Paper Aeroplane” scoring at a low 1.8% - Proving, while growing up on the other side of the tracks might not have blessed us with the most advanced toys, but at least we never lost the ability to entertain ourselves…
