Google’s auto-complete, or query suggestion function, known as Google Suggest, will be implemented in the default Google search page within a week or two.
The function has been in the Google Labs pipeline since 2004, and is already used in certain Google services. One such instance I've noticed is the Google Toolbar, and I often wondered why it wasn’t available on the default search page.
Using an algorithm based on popularity, rather than personal historical information, Google Suggest not only predicts the query as you type, but also proposes additional keywords which may be relevant to you - in real time.
Here’s an example of a search query abandoned halfway, and completed by Google Suggest:
The suggested search queries provide the estimated number of results, and are easily navigable using the arrow keys for those who keep one hand on the gear lever and one hand on the wheel.
The Google Suggest service is up and running in the Google Labs, and will be part of your daily Internet navigation very soon – shifting focus from the ‘Did You Mean…?’ correction feature.
Take Google Suggest for a test run.
