M&G Gets Podcasting

by Rob Stokes

Whilst some media companies are struggling to get to grips with bloggers and blogging, Mail and Guardian have flown past that hurdle and are now producing their own podcast.

How lucky are they to have someone as progressive and insightful as Matthew Buckland!
Check out Scott’s interview with him here.

I listened to the first 2 episodes and they’re pretty good. I think having Tony Lankester behind the mike was a good move. He is a real pro and adds a certain credibility to the whole thing, even though can come across a little “radio” at times. Check out the podcast here.

I loved this quote from the top brass at M&G (I forget her name… sorry):

“Increasingly we are not going to be a newspaper. Instead good quality content and excellent political coverage delivered over a variety of platforms, podcasting is just one of those.”

Pretty flippen savvy!

She also tells us that while their website is thriving, their print circulation is going up. Content is king and they are just making sure that they deliver it in the ways the people want it.

My favourite thing about the podcast is that it delivers solid value really quickly: Tony doesn’t bugger around. Whilst the amateurishness of podcasts was “cute” in the early days, sometimes you listen to an hour show and 20 minutes of that is the host doing something arb.

Tony is fast and furious and I know it’s an excellent use of my precious time. I am now a subscriber.

Finally, BMW are sponsoring the podcast (clever!) and as I don’t listen to the radio they now have access to my ears for the first time. I hope they are going to engage me beyond a few straplines and the occasional jingle, those bland tactics are just so medium wave…
