A Day in the Life of.. A DesignStar

by Grant McLachlan

Trying to put pen to paper (fingers to keyboard) about a day in the life of a designer at Quirk is not as easy as I thought it would be. When I first started thinking about what a normal day is like for me and the rest of my team I was pretty stumped, mainly because the word “normal” isn’t really associated with us.

There are 6 of us in the awesomely awesome design team, Gavin, Peter, Zubeir, Blaize, Yasin and myself. Each day at Quirk as a designer is unique and it is often very difficult to judge what your day will be like until our Traffic Goddess starts to spam us.

Sue is said Traffic Goddess/Manager and without her our lives would be complete chaos. Sue keeps all our work in order and schedules it for completion. She is also an honorary member of the design team.

In short, our days are filled up with lots of childish banter, chatting on IM, browsing Facebook, sitting on the couches, reading RSS, surfing YouTube, planning our weekends and a small thing we like to call work:).
We have a good balance between work and fun. I think the fun-ness is a key ingredient to what makes Quirk the company it is – you’ve got to be a little insane to stay sane.

The kind of work we do at Quirk varies quite a bit. We don’t just do design but we are also efficient in HTML and CSS. All Quirk’s designs are built and coded by us – having 6 designers competent in HTML and CSS is something you don't find very often these days.

Other than designing and building sites we also do a lot of Email Marketing. We use Milk mailing software that was developed in-house by Craig to manage all our email campaigns. This involves design, coding, testing, database preparation and the sending of the email, which is probably the scariest part of our job. One small lapse of concentration could result in mayhem. For some tips on Email Marketing you might want to check out this post.

That forms the bulk of what we do on a day-to-day basis. We do dabble around with other kinds of work, such as Flash, corporate IDs and recently a bit of video work that Peter (aka Wayne Gretzky is the greatest sportsman of all time) is pioneering. We have also recently been involved in developing Google Earth Layers, which have been a great learning curve for everyone involved.

Sharing knowledge, ideas, resources and cool design on a daily basis is also very important to us. As a designer it is very important to be kept up to date with the latest trends in this ever-changing industry. I find that a little daily dose of my RSS feed usually gives me the fix that I’m looking for. Veer, Stylegala, design float, Smashing Magazine, Campaign Monitor, CSS Mania and SpoonGraphics are just a couple that I visit regularly to learn from and be inspired by.

You’ll also often find us working together and giving each other a hand in finding solutions to different problems. These usually involve rendering issues with IE and Outlook 2007 - they are not our best friends.

Friday has to be hands down the best day for our team. After slaving away the whole week we all arrive to work with a slight sense of excitement - kind of like a kid the day before Christmas. As the day winds to a close and the jokes about each other and Darryn increase, we all wait with much excitement for 4pm (aka beer o’clock) when we all kick back, relax and enjoy the last few moments of a usually very hectic week.

In a nutshell (not a real nutshell that would just be ridiculous) that is pretty much what our days at Quirk are like.

P.S. - If you're interested in joining our awesomly awesome team, check out the job posting here.
