There's only one thing I love more than champagne… champagne at a 40% discount!
After reading this article I wish I was in the UK so I could be taking advantage of the 40% online discount voucher from Threshers right now.
The Big Idea
So the Threshers chain decided to do a little promotion - a downloadable 40% discount voucher on wine and champagne that was intended for suppliers.
The Big Problem
Millions of people have downloaded the voucher, some stores have run out of stock and the chain is a tad stressed this discount could adversely affect the profit margins.
The Big Lesson
Never underestimate the power of viral marketing and always be prepared.
The Value of Viral Marketing
Ever had flu? One day you're feeling a little iffy the next you've got the shakes and your internal thermometer is about to explode… the virus moves quickly and efficiently, as does viral marketing. What was meant to go to a few hundred individuals spread to millions.
First appearing on Stormhoek's site it's been reported that the voucher had been downloaded more than 800 000 times at the time the above mentioned article was published. From there it spread quicker than a fire on Table Mountain on a windy summer's day via blogs, chat room, friend emailing their friends, those friends emailing other friends etc.
The result of this supplier's promotion has been astounding and while many are worried that it may have a negative impact on profit margins, a Threshers manager had this to say. So while the chain was definitely not prepared, the publicity they are garnering is astounding.
The only problem here comes into play if and when the stores can't honour the vouchers and customers turn a bit sour.
Web savvy customers will then start doing what we know best - complaining!
I know if I downloaded my Champers voucher and spent all day getting excited about drinking it (as I do) and I walked into the store and they couldn't sell me a discounted bottle because they'd run out of stock, I'd go home and write a scathing post…
Perhaps next time a company decides on going viral with something like this they should have a solid online crisis management strategy in place… just in case.
On that note it's our end of year function this evening, so I'm off home to put on a bit of slap and then head off in search of that glass of champagne that writing this post has made me crave!
