Being Green is About More than Just a Colour

by Kelly Wheeler

After Kat’s post about how Quirk is making a serious effort to reduce its carbon footprint, we thought this little viral snack would be appropriate. The animated creatures aren’t quite Disney, but then again, neither is the world we live in today.

The message is simple, “how green you are is not what you give, it’s how you live.”

The viral comes from MTV Switch and is part of their effort to get their audience to endorse the environmentally friendly movement. The catchy little tune sings about green-washing – basically pretending to be green in order to mislead consumers (and in post-US election madness, voters) about the true nature of products and policies.

One of the lines sung by the, hell, let’s just call him cute, main character really intrigued me. “Politicians feed us crap, celebrity artists sing...” This condemnation of the empty gestures made by the people in the world’s spotlight is interesting coming from MTV – the home of bling, celebrities, mini skirts and materialism at its most garish.

Needless to say, it will still hopefully make a young generation think – going green is actually not that hard. We can all do it and us all doing it is actually the only way to save the planet.

The accompanying website offers the youth the chance to get involved and makes going green cool – in true MTV style.
