SA Awards Design Blog-off

by Sarah Manners

UPDATE: Check out the full list of logos here.

Being the comment junkie I am, I was thrilled to get to work and see the comments for yesterday’s SA Blog Awards post sitting on 16 - now 21 (yes I know I’m a nerd). What a great start to Valentine’s Day! Then I read them… yikes.

As Rafiq said there’s a lot of destructive criticism going on there.
Nicole, I applaud your effort – I hope you’re not sitting in some padded room rocking yourself to sleep because of all the negative comments (at least Smith loves you).

While I’m not really interested in whether any of the comments on the design are right or wrong (if you saw my stick man drawings you’d understand why), what I am interested in is why the focus of such an awesome project has moved from the big idea to a picture. To cut a long story short the SA Blog Awards are a fantastic idea and Quirk applauds the initiative!

It’s time to put your money where your mouth is

What we’ve decided to do is run an unofficial SA Blog Awards logo design competition and I expect fantastic designs from every single one of you who posted a negative comment - that includes you Mr “chip on my shoulder” Bayley ;-)

Send us your designs by the end of Wednesday the 28th of Feb we’ll stick ‘em all up on the blog, you tell us which you like best.

Quirk would like to invite Coda, John Cherry and Rich to help us pick the best design, you interested? You can totally submit designs of your own as the comments garnered will be a big deciding factor and I’ll just keep an eye out on your judging (and I can be somewhat scary from time to time – so no cheating).

So what do you get if you win? This is where it gets exciting, the winner of the unofficial logo design competition will receive an Apple TV (no I’m not shitting you… watch your language). Check it out:

Start working on your designs and have a FAB Valentine's Day!

As per usual Smith has made my day, today he did it by submitting the first design:

According to him, “I really do think mine is way better...a return to our roots… Nicole can have my Apple TV, a Mac Mini is infinitely better”.

22 Feb, 7.15am (local SA time)

Sean Orsmond submitted his 'Throw the Blog a Bone!' logo yesterday along with the very amusing creative thought process that went in to the design:
Using an eager, yappy 'chatty' pup as a metaphor for bloggers (eager to tell you stuff / expose themselves / get noticed???). They were very good so you are rewarding them.
And what does a dog love to get as a reward? A bone to chew on and brag to the other dogs about.

The dog is modeled on his own pup Tarquin, who must be a total cutie if this is anything to go by.
Good Luck Sean!

I don't have a *%@^@ chip on my shoulder Sarah. Nice idea though. I'll be submitting somethig with loads of Helvetica, gradients and a drop shadow :-) Come on guys, who else is in?

Posted by Andrew on 2007/02/14

Thanks Sarah. As I said in my last comment - community input is most welcome. If the logo is a worry, then yeah - hit us with your ideas. If submissions could be in fairly quickly that you'd really help. My suggestion is that everybody works on the main banner logo and we just leave the nomination buttons as they are. If we don't get a submission which completely takes game, Nicole gets to watch Apple TV.

Posted by Cherryflava on 2007/02/14

I'm looking forward to seeing what you've got Andrew ;-) We'll include Nicole's design - if she comes out tops she wins the prize. Designers - Get cracking

Posted by Smith on 2007/02/14

Can you Digg it? http://digg.com/design/Win_an_Apple_TV_by_designing_a_logo

Posted by rafiq on 2007/02/14

Cool, I like the idea Be aware Nicole designed the logo in 1 day, for free. So, now that there is some renumeration in the picture, I think I'll soon be popping around her place more often to watch some Apple TV. What's the brief for the logo? Professional, Red Carpet Awards, Proudly South African, Fun and Social, All of the above? How will the Logo design be judged?

Posted by Miguel dos Santos on 2007/02/14

THis is HowTo put a positive spin on things. Thanks you quirk stars. Nicole can spend morethan 15 mintues designing the logo now, cos hey it was never meant to be THE logo anyhow.

Posted by rafiq on 2007/02/14

PS: Now to see if Quirk accepts trackbacks & pings :)

Posted by rafiq on 2007/02/14

Mark (smith) you crack me up! I think Hugh would be mighty proud of your efforts. Go Nicole!

Posted by Rob on 2007/02/14

Rob, whats this doing to your traffic?

Posted by Smith on 2007/02/14

Rad, count me in...!

Posted by Rich...! on 2007/02/14

I'm down with that too. *bites tongue before saying something brash about design competitions* ;)

Posted by coda on 2007/02/14

Thanks Rich and Coda - the designs will be posted as they come in. Chat soon.

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/02/15

designers are passionate about their work and the work of others - this includes harsh criticism (I have received my fair share from my CD - "this is terrible" being a favourite) - its part and parcel - its not about being pompous and arrogant - you have to TRY leave your ego out of it. so its one arb logo - I agree - but this is an open forum and we gave our 2 cents. childish remarks would have been "you suck" but from my experience comments, as opposed to posts, are not always well thought out and are more spontaneous (and yes can get nasty).

Posted by gavin on 2007/02/15

Hells bells I think i win. where are all you others? huh? Sheesh.

Posted by Smith on 2007/02/20

I'm not seeing any designs posted yet - does that mean that no one entered? With coda as a judge that already counts me out from participating :P

Posted by tripeak on 2007/02/20

I'll be putting three more up shortly. Designers get cracking - time is running out!

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/02/20

and I will add to the prize pool. I have a very cool yahoo pen. its purple and silver and shiny. and it writes. and clicks. awesome.

Posted by Smith on 2007/02/22

Sheesh, I've been so stuck in with clients around here I haven't even noticed what's been happening in the 'sphere... :-) It's good to see some real creativity going into the logo at last (thahks Quirkstars for your effort). The previous two versions just never felt right, as much as I tried to tweak them... Why? I practically hate our flag colours, and try as hard as I did, I just couldn't put any passion into the design, or get to that "zen" level where I step back and go "this kicks ass". Quite strange yes, but it just goes to show what a difference loving what you do can make to any endeavour! That being said, what's on show is pretty nifty, far surpassing my original efforts. Nice!

Posted by Martin on 2007/02/23

Hey, did you guys get my submissions? I never got a reply back… So how is the judging gonna work, will the pro's narrow it down to like a top three and then let the public vote… or is the judges decision final?

Posted by Noodle on 2007/03/01

Guys just wanted to know what was up with the blog award logos. I sent one through yesterday and don't see it up?

Posted by K on 2007/03/01

All the designs will be up shortly. Will take all feedback into consideration but it's pretty much up to the judges.

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/03/01

HELLO SARAH I am a bit concerned about this competition. If the winner is to be announced on Monday is it not a discredit to the designs that have not been put onto the site. I feel a bit hard done by the delay. I understand that you may be busy but if a decision is to be made so soon is it not fair that you update this page as soon as possible so that people get to see all the options?

Posted by K on 2007/03/02

is anyone out there! what's happened to the rest of our logo's. No update for 2 days???? A couple of us submitted with no results. What's going on. Will someone respond to our mails or posts.

I saw one website with all different kinds of design templates. It’s a stock photography site but has vector art and illustrations. Just use those keywords to narrow your search, and then use the great visual search tools to quickly find what you want.

You can check it out at
