Who's gonna win the Apple TV?

by Sarah Manners

I had no idea that this impromptu competition would generate so much interest. I have had an astonishing 86 entries all of which are right here (yep – it’s a pretty damn long post). If I have by any small chance not added yours please drop me a mail and I'll get it up asap. So all you need to do is look through the submissions and send us your comments. On that note – let’s not have a repeat of the original drama – if you’ve got nothing nice to say just don’t say anything – we’re looking for the designs you like best! Rich…!, Coda, Jon, Rafiq – which are your top three?

Update: Rich…! Has had a look at all these fab designs and has asked us to let all you designers know that Missing Link is hiring in Jo’burg at the mo. Contact them if you’re interested (offer not open to Quirk design team – sorry boys, you're stuck with us).

My vote goes to Number 60. Very cool.

Posted by Sarah A on 2007/03/01

Sarah, my entry seems to have been mislaid. it cant be cause it was handdrawn and rubbish. It must be because of the penguins, damn penguins. I like 64. its divisible by 8 and 2 and 4.

Posted by Smith on 2007/03/01

Bad Sarah. Naughty Sarah! Soon to be number 84. Sorry Smith.

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/03/01

Forrester at no.8 and logo 71 deserve a pat on the back. ;-)

Posted by JBagley on 2007/03/01

I'm not going to be the judge of this. The question should be which logo would be worthy of space in a highly visible position for a full year on your blog if you should win? got 300+ nominations to go through before sunday for only 2 of the categories.

Posted by rafiq on 2007/03/01

Something told me... write a < a href="http://unodewaal.wordpress.com/2007/03/01/sa-blog-awards-n-bietjie-insentief-en-n-bietjie-crit/"> review.

Posted by Uno on 2007/03/01

Eek... that link broke. But it's working anyway. Copy and paste for y'all.

Posted by Uno on 2007/03/01

Wow, there's some really great designs here!!! I like 23, but absolutely hate 27... Sorry - must be me duplicate content filter... lol - 57

Posted by Werner on 2007/03/02

Right, short of voting for my own beautiful designs - my faves are No. 47 and No. 68 smooth typography, bold standout, slick finish… not too cocobongo african, I like the international feel - perfect for the worldwideweb.

Posted by Noodle on 2007/03/02

Wow. What an incredible response. I don't think anyone could have predicted that there would be this many entries. I am really happy that something so positive has come out of what started as something fairly negative. A round of applause to the local blog and design community.

Posted by Andrew on 2007/03/02

Yes Andrew. Great response. And which ones are yours? My vote goes to #'s 10, 47 and 60. I think I Iike #8 too, bit it reminds me too much of election day...

Posted by Heidi on 2007/03/02

Design # 8

Posted by Dave Duarte on 2007/03/02

Some very nice designs, well done! Although I couldn't just pick without justifying, so sorry if this is a bit long. I favour those that will work best as an award graphic like rafiq said above - so it should be flexible to accommodate any blog (resizes well and can sit on a light or dark background). #42 is clever and stylish but tricky, because like Uno mentioned on his blog, it's slightly suggestive. But with some reworking/simplifying of the mouse, increasing the size of the type alongside, and injecting some colour, I think it's my first choice. I envision it working as a physical award too, if that's ever a possibility. Similar in concept to #23 which also has potential. #21: love the fun typography with the inclusion of the star, and the character is good too. What kind of notebook is that? ;) #71 with #70's arrow, only smaller and minus the drop shadow. #75 for it's simplicity, but maybe the year should be inside the comment with the rest of the text. #60 has a nice style but I don't like the use of the RSS icon - it's confusing and RSS doesn't necessarily imply blog either.

Posted by coda on 2007/03/02

(p.s. line breaks in comments please!) ;)

Posted by coda on 2007/03/02

Thanks Coda. Def agree with the line breaks suggestion. Will get it sorted.

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/03/02

Wow, some of those are outstanding. The panel will have their hands full trying to pick a winner.

Posted by hash on 2007/03/02

1 and 60

Posted by Charlotte on 2007/03/02

I concur with coda. The image needs to be flexible across a range of colour backgrounds as an awards graphic. At the same time the graphic needs to work with additional award clarification included in the image i.e best entertainment or GLBT blog. Like the visual of #71 with #70 arrow. Perhaps can be colour reverse for dark background winners. Second fav #3 and #21. Fun tone to it which is appealing. #65 is third for me - great clean look that begs for further investigation. #23 also cool. Great designs - bloody nice work everybody.

Posted by Cherryflava on 2007/03/02

Design #45 :P

Posted by Tyler on 2007/03/02

stoked with all the entries - massive interest in this which is cool. I believe this is for some competition - I think its called blobbing or something. I think we need a detailed brief next time even though this is for fun.

Posted by gavich on 2007/03/03

WOW people!! I m absolutely amazed by the response and the quality of many of the entries! I definitely think that an official competition should be held for next years SA Blog Awards logo and the winner takes all. There is allot of potential in our country and it just takes something like this to expose it.

Posted by Rainer on 2007/03/04

No. 65 - awesome. I would lose the ink splot though. I like the concept in 8 as well.

Posted by Fred on 2007/03/04

I vote for 65/69. Well done to all. Loads of talent.

Posted by SuperSanti on 2007/03/05

Who is the winner the suspense is killing me. Its Monday afternoon already and no announcement has been made. Why, Dear GOD why?

Posted by K on 2007/03/05

who's the winner>>>>? winner who?

Posted by MO on 2007/03/05

Happy Monday everyone! I know you're all chomping at the bit to find out who has won the Apple TV... There have been so many votes across the full range of designs that picking a winner's going to be a little trickier than we thought (think I was naive to expect only a couple of designs*sob*). After Stii’s recent post - we’ve decided to accept Neville Newey’s proposal to get a poll up (Muti style).

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/03/05

Number 42. love the B

Posted by R on 2007/03/05

Hey Sarah, the link to Stii's post doesn't work. Think you used a "%" character instead of a "/" in the permalink :)

Posted by Mark on 2007/03/05

Oh bugger! Thanks for picking that up Mark. Here's the link: http://stii.za.net/archives/127

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/03/05

Any idea when the winning will be announced? Would be cool if the new sa blgo awards logo could be used on the finalists blogs as a 'vote for me' button. What you guys think?

Posted by rafiq on 2007/03/06

Hey Rafiq - There have been so many votes across the full range of designs that picking a winner's going to be a little trickier than we thought. We’ve decided to accept Neville Newey’s proposal to get a poll up (Muti style). It should be up soon and we're going to let it run until the end of Sunday, so the winner will be announced on Monday. I'll get a post up on GottaQuirk as soon as everything is sorted. Sorry for the wait ;)

Posted by Sarah M on 2007/03/06

No worries, the finalists are up on the sablogwards site, vote for me widget for the finalists is currently under contstruction....

Posted by rafiq on 2007/03/06

Holy moly. Thanks goodness I'm not judging this lot. This sort of thing makes me smile. Isn't SA a veritable El Dorado of talent? Well done to all of you, I can't choose.

Posted by Mike on 2007/03/06

Hey! Vote for your fav design on the muti poll now - http://muti.co.za/sablogs
