Who ya gonna trust?

by Lachlan McArthur

There has always a lot of debate around trust as far as the Internet is concerned. With so much info out there published by corporations, governments, individuals, interest groups, and with so much of that information in conflict figuring out who to trust is important.

  • It is well known that people trust individuals more than corporations, so if I tell a friend that this product is really good, they are more likely to believe me that the company that produces the product.
  • Then there are friends of friends. You don't trust their opinions as much as your actual friends, but as they are endorsed by your friend you still apportion them a certain amount of trust.
  • Then there are experts that you don't know personally but you are aware that they are generally recognised as very knowledgeable in a certain area, so you again apportion them with a certain amount of trust, at least in their area of expertise.

We weigh up all these factors a lot of the time without even realising it and make a decision as to who to believe.

Then occasionally you see something which fits into your world view so completely, that you will trust it implicitly until the day you die no matter what evidence to the contrary is presented to you. I recently stumbled upon just such a piece of info. Check out this article from the Shake Well Before Use blog.

Not only is it ok to ogle beautiful girls, not doing so would endanger my health.
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense.

Even if I admit the very remote possibility that this article is not 100% accurate and truthful, ignoring it is not a risk I am willing to take, are you?  :D

My rule of thumb regarding trust is is his name Dave? No? dont trust him. if yes, still don't trust him.

I gotta say that is very true (about the trust thing not the Dave thing). It’s the reason that companies have to look into the whole blog thing more and more now (webPR+). Friend Word-Of-Mouth is trusted far more than corporate announcements. PS. I have always believed that something like that ogling thing was true... just waited for someone to prove it for me.
