Sxipping through web forms

by Rob Stokes

Ever since I watched Dick Hardt’s gripping OSCON 2005 keynote, Identity 2.0 or digital identity has intrigued me.
If you have never heard of this stuff go and have a read, it’s really interesting and without doubt the way online identity management will go. It’s kinda where Microsoft tried to take its Passport service (and in South Africa, MWeb’s “single sign on”) except decentralised and therefore, in theory, free from corporate control.

At first it was all talk, but when the big boys (Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL at least) started supporting OpenID which is a user centric protocol for exchanging identity data, I thought I’d better see what all the fuss is about so I headed over to Sxip.com (Dick’s company) to get myself an OpenID.

But this isn’t a post about OpenID, or Identity2.0, those have been written (watching Dick’s presentation is a must). This is a post about a smashing not-so-little Firefox plugin which I found whilst looking for an OpenID.

Sxipper, which is made by Sxip “is a free Firefox plug-in that saves you time on the web by enabling you to easily control the release and management of your identity data. With a single click, Sxipper is trained to securely log you in with a username or an Identity 2.0 authentication mechanism such as OpenID”.

Now Sxipper may be the largest Firefox plugin I’ve ever installed (I think it’s about 3MB!) but it is helluva useful. Apart from its obvious OpenID support, the ability to setup up persona’s and use these to determine what information you want given to sites, makes filling in web forms an absolute pleasure. It does take a bit of training and a little getting used to, but once you’ve crossed that barrier they’ll be no looking back.
