A quick heads up: I've just released the new version of SearchStatus. For those who haven't heard of it, SearchStatus is a Firefox extension that tells you your Google PageRank and Alexa ranking in a neat status bar in the corner of your browser. It also has a number of menu accessible functions such as keyword density, link report, backlink checks, WHOIS etc. If you haven't tried it (and use the 'Fox), I urge you to give it a go. For those running the previous version of 1.18, Firefox should auto-update this extension (Tools->Add-ons->Find Updates).
New to this version are statistics from Compete.com. Compete has been coming up in the world of web traffic measurement, and while Alexa remains king of the pile, Compete offers some pretty interesting stats such as average stay on a site - which is a critical measure, and a topic for another post. SearchStatus presents the overall Compete ranking for the domain you are on, and provides a menu showing the estimated number of monthly visitors, along with a link to the Compete SnapShot page for that site. The Compete rank is a number much like the Alexa rank, which SearchStatus converts into a little purple bar for better visibility.
So, there are now 3 independent measures for every site you visit. And as they say, never go to sea with 2 clocks...
It also depends where you originally installed from... clicking on the .xpi link on quirk.biz is the other, foolproof way to it. Let me know if you have any troubles...

It's a GREAT extension. I actually use it for 2 main things:
The PR statusbar info
The NoFollow highlighting - one of those things like delivery reports I've found I can't live without...

hello :)
I noticed your smart extension was missing a locale structure, so
I created one to be grabbed here :

I suggest you should submit it to http:www.babelzilla.org
to get more locale languages for free (currently en-US only)
BabelZilla is a community of volunteer translators dedicated to the
translation of extensions for moz family apps. We have people from all
over the world currently maintaining translations for 400 extensions
with an online translation system.
You are welcome to hop on there :)
Have a nice day

Hi Jean-Bernard,
Thanks! I was always nervous about localisation, but you've pointed the way - I'll certainly try getting this in.

@Goofy - I see ur having trouble in making a link.
I believe your problem might be that ur not using two underscores _ _ (space between them added to illistrate that its two) before and after the link ...

Everyone -- you should also check out http://attentionmeter.com. I think you'll like it. Alexa, Compete, Technorati, etc stats all in one place.

Thanks a lot for this Tool. I use it all the time. It is simple, small and powerfull.
Only thing that bugs me is that recently I do not get a page for the backlink check on MSN.
Can you fix that or is it them blocking it?

a great tool has just got better
great design, and very inconspicuous in the bottom right
I don't see how anyone could not afford to have it.

Thanks for all your positive words.
Ole, MSN has unfortunately blocked all backlink checks for the time being, for all comers. Darren has even suggested that I remove the menu option to reduce confusion, but I'm hoping they enable it again soon.

Hi Jim,
In the menu bar, click on Tools->Addons and select SearchStatus from the list. Click on Preferences and a dialog will appear where you can position SearchStatus anywhere in the browser chrome.
Let me know if you don't come right.

I'm baffled.
I have always like SearchStatus, and when Firefox automatically upgraded me to version 1.20 I liked it even better with the Compete stats.
However, last week I got a new computer -- a MacBook Pro, also running Parallels with Windows XP. SearchStatus no longer shows the Compete rankings for me, neither on Mac nor Windows in in Parallels.
I'm running the same version of Firefox (2.0.0.4) on all machines, and the same version of SearchStatus. I've tried reinstalling it, and all the configuration options to no avail. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

Hi Art,
Try right-clicking on the 'q' and selecting Enable -> Compete Rank.
hth,
Craig

Ah....thank you! I don't know why I didn't see that before. I guess I'm already loosing my right click sense after one week on a mac.
