We've blogged a bit at GottaQuirk about the US presidential campaigns. Smallz got the ball rolling with his President 2.0 post and then there were follow-up pieces by both Andrew and myself.
I didn't think that I was going to add a fourth post to the mixer but then I came across this gutsy move by Hillary Clinton (registration required). I'm not the most avid follower of politics but Clinton's always come across as being very clinical, very clean-cut. So it was a bit surprising when I read that she's invited YouTube users to her site to vote for or submit what they think should be the theme song for her campaign.
It adds a different dimension to her image when you consider that she's practically inviting every single opposition joker to take a cheap shot at her. Take into account some of the following nominations: REM's It's the End of the World as We Know It, the Rolling Stones' She's so Cold and Foreigner's Cold as Ice. (For some more possible songs take a look at this user's nominations.)
Considering Clinton's previous musical mishap (where Captain Jack was accidentally played during a televised event) we have to assume that she knew that she was putting herself in the line of fire. It's a refreshing sight, seeing such a prominent personality not taking herself too seriously, and one that's likely to do the Clinton brand a world of good.
Peter Daou, Clinton's Internet campaign director, had this to say, “When you invite people to interact, people from all across the political spectrum will interact, and that’s the nature of the contest and it wasn’t unexpected.”
A refreshing attitude, and one that seems to have paid dividends. Clinton's videos, inviting users to vote, have each been viewed almost a million times and have inspired mostly positive comments from users. Take this one from nuzgirl07 for example, “I have to admit, while I might not necessarily vote for her, she does have a good sense of humor.”
And on top of all this she has managed to avoid getting Elton John's The Bitch is Back as one of the ten final choices. Actually, considering that Daou insists that the songs were picked based on popularity alone, it's quite impressive that the ten that made it this far are in fact all pretty kosher.
