How should we address you, Sir?

by Craig Raw

As part of our MyQuirk portal, we try to collect a fair amount of information about our clients so that we may better customise our service, and just generally be more human. This of course must start with the standard first name, last name, email address roundup. One of these standard fields is also title, which you can present in a form as drop down selection or a text field.

If you choose a drop down, you must select a list of elements. Most start off with Mr, Mrs, Miss and Ms, and you can extend it further to Dr, Prof, Sir, Reverend and Rabbi. You then of course need to consider the needs of the more rarified but none the less influential members of our society. To enumerate a few, the Earls, Duchesses, Countesses, Viscounts and Marquees all deserve fair mention. And then one must consider the military world, since it is rarely wise to anger such a potentially belligerent fraternity, including Colonels, Captains, Majors, Rear Admirals, Field Marshals and Brigadiers.

Hmmm. I'm sticking with a text field.

I'd agree, but only because it's easier to code than a very long dropdown :-)
