The Casio EXILIM: Making it easier to embarrass yourself

by Sarah Beaumont

Just when you thought YouTube had enough embarrassing videos of you doing the Macarena at your office Christmas party they go and strike a deal with Casio to develop the first camera with YouTube capabilities. Yes, now we can embarrass ourselves quicker and at a higher resolution. The new Casio EXILIM range of cameras has been created in conjunction with YouTube to provide settings specifically for recording, storing and uploading videos onto YouTube.

This new invention has a specific “YouTube mode” which provides sharp resolution (640 x 480) and a frame rate of up to 30 frames per second. With multiple video uploading capabilities it is specifically designed to simplify the process of loading clips on to YouTube. Casio has taken things to a new level by creating a camera with these new features, but has taken aesthetics into account as well and kept this camera lightweight at about the size of an oversized credit card.

With over 1.73 billion video views, YouTube has taken video viewing by storm and has created an entire sub-culture of watchers and users. According to recent stats the total time people spent watching YouTube since last year is 9,305 years. One would assume that this latest innovation is only going to increase these viewer rates and create a new way for YouTube to increase consumer generated media.

Although pricey  (about $ 300) both Casio and YouTube expect great success from this new venture when it is launched in August.

Awesome! I have an Exilim and must say it's a great little camera, though the video capability ends up confusing me more often than being helpful. But for more people, I reckon this will be a hot reason to buy this snappy little camera even if the greater socio-economic implications are a little dicey
