Viral campaigns are effective

by Sarah Beaumont

So generally I tend to think, great, viral campaigns work but I’ve never really placed a tremendous amount of faith in them… I mean you just never know if something will actually go viral or not. Today my opinion changed…

To back track a little, I am completing my thesis. With this in mind, my thesis group have been discussing ways to get people to fill out our online surveys (a near impossible task, let me tell you). After various (read long and torturous) discussions, we decided to start a Facebook group. The next problem was how to get people to join this group and fill out the survey… (people can be so fickle).

So after discussing various alternatives we decided the best way, was to start a group called “If 1000 people fill out our survey, we will flash Gareth Cliff”(Gareth Cliff is a DJ for all our international readers).

Now this bold move, has gathered both scorn and praise. On the plus side we had 50 surveys filled in within the first hour. On the negative side an onslaught of emails about how we were offending Gareth Cliff began to arrive.

Well my reply to all this, is GET A SENSE OF HUMOUR ALREADY. It’s not like we are using him for financial gain at his expense. I mean really we just wanted a group that would contain a bit of spice. After these varied emails I decided to shut down the group – which in turn caused more controversy with people frantically emailing me to say how ridiculous it was to shut it down.

So to cut a long story short I reopened the group and I’d love to hear any comments on the subject. Emails have been flying around all day saying that Gareth’s agent is going to have a fit and if that does happen (which I some how doubt it really will) I’d just like to state that our intention was not to offend anyone, especially Gareth. Our intention was to rather create a buzz and get people to fill out the survey. It is called a marketing strategy, halloo!

As an online marketing tactic I think that the effectiveness or Viral Marketing is greatly under estimated, and I would hope to see it being utilised to a greater degree in the future.

So on a final note, go online and check out our group, or our survey, and if we reach the 1000 mark, Gareth might be in for a small shock…
They say there is no such thing as bad PR; I do hope this is true…
