Web2.0 - radio measures advertising

by Tim Shier

Sigh – what a wonderful smile crossed my face when, last night, while driving around on a frantic mission to find my father a birthday present (sorry Dad) I heard radio DJ, Euphonik on 5fm offering prizes for a massive party. All he asked was for listeners to add him as a friend on Facebook then write on his wall. He also punted his show’s Facebook group, MY HOUSE::::5FM::::THE HOUSE OF HOUSE.

Genius! Radio (along with other offline mediums) advertisers have long grappled with the problem of measuring the response to campaigns on their listenership. Using this, already a mainstream social networking tool, provides the DJ with the interaction tool to communicate and engage on a personal level with his listeners (exactly what a DJ looks to do).

This is marketing at its best – I wish I had had an Internet connection to look at his friend count directly after the broadcast and then later to see how the public respond (looking at his friend count now he has over 850 friends and its climbing fast). I give a happy “Big-up!” to the DJ for leveraging off of this social networking tool – what an awesome display of personal branding and PR.
I wish Euphonik all the best and will be watching closely to see how this progresses.

For some time 5fm has been streaks ahead with regards to engaging online marketing and social media – nice to see it.

Fantastic work 5fm.

South African businesses are slow to adopt to the new "marketing principles", but if we keep publishing the success stories like you have done here, the transcendence is imminent.

On the drive to work this morning I also heard an advert for National Braai Day (yes, us South Afrikaans take our BBQing rather seriously) on 5fm. They are asking people to join the "National Braai Day" group on facebook, make a braai event for next week Monday and then upload photos of the festivities. For more information go to www.braaiday.co.za
