Stream - Day 1

by Rob Stokes

In yesterday’s newsletter I made the potentially foolish promise to blog my experience at Stream 2007. Those who read this blog often will know that I am an infrequent contributor at best so this was quite a commitment.

Well here I am in Athens, I’ve only been here a few hours and despite my nagging flu and droopy eyes (no one likes to get up at 3am… least of all me!) I’m already having a blast.

Here is the view from my room:

We arrived on the red eye from London at about 1 and after grabbing a tasty Greek lunch, I decided to meander about the hotel to meet some people and generally soak up the vibe. Within minutes I was sucked into a game of Guitar Hero. I started off with Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box but my rocking was a little sloppy and I am pretty sure Kurt Cobain was rolling in his grave at the time. But what a lot of fun! I’m determined to master the strumming before I leave this place... I will climb that Stairway to Heaven.

I eventually dragged myself away from Guitar Hero and headed toward the “big boards”. In true unconference style, Stream is driven by those attending and these boards are there to help us plan what discussions we want to get involved in, or for the brave, the discussions we want to lead.

I had already decided to try and be a little different and NOT talk about online marketing ala Quirk. I’ve done those talks a million times so instead my discussion is on “How Marketing and Technology can help make Social Development in Africa Sustainable”.
It’s quite a mouthful, but with Quirk’s new stakeholding in Ninjani it’s something I’ve recently started learning a lot about and I’m finding it really exciting. Check out the full list of discussions here.

Anyway so that’s the state of the nation so far. Now I’m off for a quick forty winks before the main event kicks off this evening. Assuming I don’t have too many Mojito’s, I’ll try and do another post before I hit the hay tonight.

So, we getting Guitar Hero in the Quirk office then?

Its funny that you spoke about that today - I just finished writing a blog post on the digital divide and the education gap between Africa and the world (hopefully Manner will put em live today). An interesting topic to present on - where there many South African (/3rd world-ish) representatives?

Tim I'm the only South African I've found so far....
