Saving the world one blog post at a time

by Sarah Manners

Ok so I thought for my “save the environment” post I’d give out some easy tips on what you can do at home and at work to play you’re part in conserving energy and the environment as a whole.

With all the load shedding we’re experiencing here in South Africa the need to conserve electrical energy has become apparent (to say the very least). I think that just being aware of the problem can go a long way to affect change. You really don’t need every light in the house blazing at once or your TV, radio and

computer on at the same time

do you? They also say turning your geyser off in the morning and back on at night can save loads of energy – you’d probably save quite a bit of cash too (just don’t forget to turn it back on otherwise you may get a bit of a shocking wakeup call).
On a side note take heed of the little save electricity messages that come on TV in the evenings – you know the one that says turn off all essential appliances besides your TV (what a hoot).
Here are some tips on conserving energy.

For years we’ve been encouraged to recycle – but how many of us actually do it? Too much hassle right?
But it really isn’t – get yourself a recycling bin and chuck all paper and clean cans and bottles in for one month – the sheer amount of what you collect will force you to realise how much you’re actually contributing to the planet’s waste problem. Take your recycling down to a local depot or school – some schools even get some money back from recycling schemes so it’s a good way to help them out too.
Why stop at home – we waste an inordinate amount of paper at work, so instead of just chucking reams of paper away get a few bins dedicated to paper and ensure that all disposable paper gets turfed into them instead of onto the waste dumps – come on folks save a forest or even a single tree (it’s so worth it in the long run).
Do you do Friday drinks? Instead of tossing the bottles away pop them into some bags and take them to be recycled – it’s so simple that it’s hard to imagine why people aren’t doing it every single day.

Not everyone can afford to buy a green car or refit their entire home with energy saving devices but recycling is something really small that everyone can get involved in to help save the environment. So stop thinking about it and do it already!

Now that a little smug cloud has formed over my desk I’m going to get back to work ;-)

You make us think, Sarah! I think that we don't really take note of the vast amounts of paper we waste, the bottles we just chuck in the bin, the plastic... blah blah blah... It's all part of starting something good and then being disciplined into maintaining it. Go Green!
