Be the change you want to see

by Carlos Menezes

So I’m sitting here struggling to write this post. And it’s annoying me. A lot.
I always want to write about environmental issues on a personal blog, but I never manage to pencil it into my day. So today’s Blog Action Day should have provided the perfect opportunity for me to pour my brain and heart out onto your screens.

Where I’m struggling though, is to come up with something original that hasn’t been written about a hundred times over. There’s a plethora of information on the web relating to the environment. Why would anything that I have to say make a significant impact?

We all get dozens of emails from our friends, we see all of the various award winning adverts and virals – for anybody reading this right now, awareness is not an issue.
But a blog or a personally written email does have a unique voice and lets the author’s personality come through. We are not lacking in resources to tackle the environmental problems facing us.

Kofi Annan has a quote that I really like: “We have the means and the capacity to deal with our problems, if only we can find the political will.” This is something that I feel can be applied across the board. Not just to politicians, but to us in all of our roles – be it that of a corporate executive, activist or consumer.

Yes, making a difference is not always going to be as clear cut as boycotting the petrol station down the road on a specific day of the week. But there are small things that can be done.

We hear about them a million times every day; recycle, save electricity, don’t waste water, etc. And yet we don’t adhere to them anywhere near as much as we could.

Awareness is not an issue. Motivation is.

Being seen by a friend taking a crate full of empty beer bottles to be recycled can inspire him to adopt a similar lifestyle. Take a look at how hybrid cars have become a symbol for celebrities around the world, and how that is stimulating demand (the fact that these celebrities still drive their gas-guzzlers on the weekends is a separate issue).

Looking after the environment and adopting a supporting lifestyle is no longer the exclusive domain of hippies. It is something everyone can get involved in at virtually no cost to themselves.

We just have to get over our current inertia and integrate the changes we want to see into our everyday lives.
