Quite a few GottaQuirkers (strange word for our readers I came across in the Quirk glossary) have been asking where to get hold of a hard copy of the textbook. In our over-excitement about releasing it free online, we've perhaps not emphasised enough that you can also order your own hard copy directly from the website - at this link here. With...wait for it...NO SHIPPING COSTS!*proud smile*

The textbook will be officially launched on Friday, which is tomorrow (yay!), and will be nationally available from the 6th of August.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I suggest you check out this post and this post, to learn a bit about eMarketing: the essential guide to online marketing. The textbook is the fruition of tons of work by the QuirkStars, and offers a wealth of knowledge about engaging online. We're also looking for your ideas on how to get free soft copies of the book to people who might not have had access to it otherwise (leave comments in the second post linked to above).

Get your ideas coming in and feel free to order online. Happy Thursday. :)

Facebook Connect, launched yesterday, signifies a huge step forward in socialising the Web.

It's not the first initiative in this direction, as we've mused on Google’s Open Social (basically a a standard way to attach applications to any site) here before. As Google pointed out at the time “we're just providing some technologies so the web as a whole can become more social, because that's clearly what users are interested in”.

Earlier this year, and building on this idea of a social Web, Google launched Friend Connect. Friend Connect is a way for site owners to attach a social network to their websites, where people can import friends from any of the partnering networks, including Google’s own Orkut, MySpace and a growing list of partners.

Facebook was not one of these partners, clearly because they had plans of their own – and yesterday they announced the details of Facebook Connect.

It's easy to think that Web domination awaiteth for Facebook, but not without first asking why Facebook Connect will be more succesful than FriendConnect.

The fact is that Facebook has many more mainstream 'non techy' users, who would adopt and use the Facebook connect features way before they would move to something else, which suggests its use would grow faster – and at the very least that the two will be competing head to head.

The potential of Friend Connect for companies was discussed by Jeremiah Owyang in a post entitled “What Facebook Connect means for corporate websites".

Facebook Connect will allow corporate websites to authenticate, interact, and share with their Facebook network – all without leaving the corporate website. Boring, static corporate websites can now become social.

Corporate websites now don't need to create a community, they just need to tap into an existing one and aggregate users from Facebook. Facebook's press release also discusses the possibility of creating more meaningful and useful applications based on specific corporate websites.

Because Facebook would now be present on any website and any blog, users activities across the Web can also be imported into their news feeds. As pointed out by Om Malik, if you comment on a blog for example, you are telling Facebook a lot about yourself.

You are essentially telling Facebook’s proverbial brain what topics - blogs or specific posts - you like to engage with. In other words, you just told the system a little bit about yourself. Now imagine such information coming from dozens of Facebook Connect partners.

Facebook Connect doesn't just socialise the Web, it makes Facebook a central identity aggregator across all websites – whether they be government websites, the blogs your read, your employers site or your favourite online store. Om Malik is right in saying this is a version of Beacon that users will opt in to. It will offer a huge amount of information for advertisers (just think what would happen if combined with Google's idea for FriendRank) but it also raises some serious questions about security and privacy.

Thanks to Rafiq for sending me the links, and to quote him directly “holy cr*p, this is huge...it changes everything”.

Update: In my excitement I became slightly overzealous in my word choice, so must apologise and highlight that Facebook Connect wasn't launched yesterday, rather just anounced, as it will be rolled out in the fall.

Due to an overabundance of Gaelic boys’ names meaning cliff or rock I will be going by my second name, Harvey. One I have spent 32 years trying to avoid.

Having shown an aptitude for public speaking and creative writing at school in Durban (yes, I was rubbish at sport) I headed to Grahamstown to study Drama and Journalism. After two years common sense prevailed and Drama was dropped. Shortly after graduating in 1997 I followed the exodus to London to work and travel and only returned last year. In that time I was a barman, a security guard, a debt collector and wore a 7 foot lion costume in the London Zoo. I did get to see some very cool places around the world. It is, however, great to be home and Cape Town is pretty special.

As someone who spends his life on the Internet getting the job at Quirk has been very fortuitous. Having taken the initial steps up the steep learning curve I am very excited - even if my brain is about to explode SEO facts all over the office. It’s the first job I’ve heard of where not having a Facebook account gets you fired. I now also have a MySpace, Twitter and Flickr account and I know the difference between RSI and RSS.

One of my favourite musical front men, Jared Leto from 30 seconds to Mars, was asked what kind of people he liked least. His reply was bloggers.

Needless to say he’s not one of my favourite musical front men anymore. If you want to read more about the adventures of a 32 year old living with his parents, single life in the new South Africa, rants about cricket and Operation Wife-finding then go check out my blog, hlala phansi. Somewhat dry, never sweet, always amusing.

One of the first SEO tactics you learn about is use of keywords. Not only what keywords you use but where you use them. It will be very interesting to see how recent changes to domain name regulations will affect SEO strategies to come. I would love to be at the auction where Fox’s Confectionery and Penthouse magazine go head to head for xxx.

The QuirkStation is buzzing this week, with the formal launch of our eMarketing Textbook representing the culmination of a huge amount of work and investment for many of the QuirkStars. We've been blessed with some great community support, and all the positive comments and posts (a few here, here, here and here) have put a massive smile on the collective Quirk face.

This kind of community involvement and growth was a large motivation for the birth of this project, and something we'd like to continue to cultivate as the textbook makes its way out to the world. It's for this reason that the next step in the life of eMarketing: the essential guide to online marketing, very much involves YOU.

The textbook is freely available online, and forms part of the Open Education initiative, which intends to make learning resources, ideas and methodologies freely available to all. To play our part, we've licensed the textbook under Creative Commons and made it available online for free download. This means that readers, students, teachers and you can share, alter and make contributions to the book as you wish. Its open source education all the way!

The real challenge now is to find ways to get the textbook into the hands of people who otherwise wouldn't have access to it. People who are essentially outside the online community and who also are unlikely to be able to afford the R325 ($40) for the printed version. The best way to make this happen is by sharing ideas and developing a community strategy for distributing the book. We are looking for your input and ideas to make this a reality and the contributors of the three most inspired solutions will be rewarded with their very own limited edition textbook signed by ALL the QuirkStars. Wow!

It may be a lofty goal, but this book can be a tool to grow our community. If this can be achieved, we will all benefit, so please put your ideas in the comments - RIGHT NOW!

So, your varsity days have come and gone, leaving you reminiscing with your increasingly large friends about the good old days - when your minds were fresh and the walk from one lecture to another didn’t feel like a failed attempt at the Comrades Marathon.

The bad news is that even though you left your student days behind many years ago and probably have built a successful career, staying ahead in the marketing game necessitates lifelong learning. This need to continually update your knowledge has become increasingly important in the last few decades, with the evolution of the Web in parallel with the gradual asphyxiation of more traditional forms of media.

Learning a new skill from scratch is a challenging prospect for anyone, so I have compiled some tips to make it a little easier for you.

1). Enrol in a Short Course
For corporates trying to make a go of it in the rat race, a short course or series of seminars at your local business school is an excellent way to learn a new skill. For one thing, many people like learning in a structured and disciplined environment. This adds to your skills set, while also enabling you to build on your CV. More importantly, it is an excellent excuse to get out of the office for a few days and benefit from the networking opportunities that arise.

2). Read Marketing Blogs
If not leaving your desk is the preferred alternative, you’d probably be surprised at what you can learn online - if you know where to look. Many online marketing companies have blogs that are far more than just sales tools. They are informative resources that highlight many of the most important eMarketing tactics used in top-notch agencies. The benefit of using these freely available resources is that you are learning directly from practitioners in the field. Blogs, by their very nature are also usually pretty entertaining as well as being easy to read and digest. There are loads of great eMarketing blogs out there. Some of the best ones include:

www.marketingpilgrim.com

www.marketingsherpa.com

www.seomoz.org/

www.gottaquirk.com (Quirk’s very own baby. In case you hadn’t realised, that is what are reading right now.)

3). Get Back to the Basics
At Quirk, we’re no strangers to online marketing education. (In case you hadn’t noticed, we have just published our very own, superbly awesome, eMarketing textbook - but more about that later.) Everyone knows though, that you need to learn to walk before you can run. With that in mind, Quirk published an online marketing guide: eMarketing 101. This is just what you need to help you take your first tentative steps in the vast (and complex) abyss that is the online world.

Credit: David Goehring

4). Take a Bold Step Forwards
If eMarketing 101 awakens your youthful enthusiasm to learn and whets your eMarketing appetite, then perhaps you’re ready for the next step. Quirk’s sequel to eMarketing 101 was the comprehensive How To guide that will delineate the enigma of Social Media, reveal the secrets contained in wikis and generally take the fairy wheels off your eMarketing tricycle. Good luck!

5). Consolidate Your Knowledge: Read eMarketing: the essential guide to online marketing
This is Quirk eMarketing’s newly launched masterpiece. eMarketing: the essential guide to online marketing is a starting point for anyone wanting to learn about online marketing, but it is also the end point. The title says it all - it’s essential. But why?
Well, first off, it’s the most up to date resource of its kind in South Africa. It adheres to the Open Education Declaration. This ensures that it can be downloaded for free and can be distributed freely in accordance with our Creative Commons license.
In summary, this book is 300 page compilation of Quirk’s vast eMarketing experience and our 9 year involvement with tertiary education. It outlines, in detail, all of the eMarketing tactics used by agencies to take their client’s brands to new heights. And it’s awesome! So download the pdf, or alternatively, beg, borrow or steal a copy and get reading.

6). Practice Practice Practice
Now that you have all this information, you need to do something with it - eMarketing is all about the implementation. A good place to start is by using that $15 Google Adwords Voucher that you will receive when you purchase your own copy of eMarketing: the essential guide to online marketing. Alternatively, use the tactics that you have studied to perform some basic SEO on your own web site or blog. You could also investigate ways to make Social Media Marketing work for your brand, take a proactive step toward managing your online reputation, or be the brains behind a great viral. Whatever you do, have fun with the knowledge you have gained.

Happy learning!

Although the blogging community outed us a little early last week, I’m incredibly proud to formally announce the publishing of eMarketing: The essential guide to online marketing. It’s our contribution to Open Education.

Really bad photo of the textbook.

eMarketing is a 300 page textbook aimed at tertiary education students, business owners and marketers who want to get ahead in online marketing. It has everything from the facts to case studies and study questions around each eMarketing tactic. We had a huge amount of help from the awesome chaps at UCT who helped us make sure that it was academically suitable - not a straight forward achievement.

To support the book, we have put up a website at www.quirk.biz/emarketingtextbook. The site contains a host of resources for both lecturers and students. In fact we don’t just want this to be a book, we want it to be a complete open source course from the lecture presentations to the exam questions. If you are an educator, please sign up on the site and start sharing!

Whilst putting together a 300 page book is quite something, I think the real achievement for the Quirk team here is the fact that the book is licensed under Creative Commons. This means that not only is the book available for FREE online, people are also able to share and alter it as their needs require. It is my belief that education is the most important factor if we want to deliver a better way of life for all. The Open Education Initiative, formed in September 2007, aims to make educational resources freely available to all. At Quirk we have been teaching at various universities and corporate events for years. This feels like a continuation of that, and we’re proud to share our eMarketing knowledge with the world.

I want to thank every single person at Quirk for the role they played in this book. It may have my name on the front cover, but the book started with our eMarketing 101 series and hundreds of articles, whitepapers and presentations. So, it truly is a product from “the minds of Quirk”. QuirkStars, you rock!

In my almost 10 years at Quirk, I think this is the coolest thing we have ever done. Putting together this book was so much harder than we ever expected so to get to this day feels incredible. Please download our book and let us know what you think of it and how we can improve it. This is a community effort which Quirk just happens to have started, it’s up to you to take it further…

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Eran Eyal, co-founder of springleap.

Springleap is an online t-shirt store come social network, reminiscent of Threadless, but steeped in South African homegrown goodness. Members submit designs, and the community decides which ones go to print. We've been known to enjoy the shirts here at Quirk as well.

Our conversation covered everything from Springleap’s challenges to Eran’s vision for growth in the South African industry. The man is passionate about this stuff, to say the least. I’ve transcribed some snippets and highlights below:

Do you know all the designers, designs and the stories around them?

I do actually know all the stories, as the process requires that I interact with all the artists and handle the production line.

Everything is handled online, so when you enter a springleap design you write a story about it. We’re trying to get away from a situation where you don’t really know the designer of the t-shirt you’re wearing, like with a Levi’s or Guess shirt. When you choose what you wear and what the design is, we’re trying to personalise the process…

It sounds like there’s quite an anti-globalisation philosophy behind springleap.

Yes, totally. This is the idea behind allowing profiles on the website and postcards from the creators with the shirts. The whole idea is that you’re not going to stop globalisation. You need to be aware within the system, and realise what’s going on, and that’s how real change is brought about. It’s about making people conscientious.

Which is where the community built up around springleap comes in?

Actually that’s the really interesting thing. In any Web 2.0 strategy you want the community to build up the content, and you just provide the medium and make it as user friendly as possible. …

On the one side it’s all about the design. …

On the other side, I have a competition called King of Comments and Queen of Quotes. We offer a R500 prize to the person who most consistently and constructively comments on the art and design. ….

What has springleap’s growth been like?

We’re growing every month. In terms of just the votes cast, we grow by about 4,000 votes every time, and people can reap the rewards of this.
…
We’re trying to take the SA cotton industry to another level. We want to take on design and export, and be proudly South African. And provide recurring revenue for the artists - like royalties. We are looking into eventually breaking into more products. If we can contact K-Mart, for example, and tell them we have original designs for beach towels, then we could really be onto something.

So you could compete on original designs, but could South Africa really compete with a country like China in terms of cost?

I think we could, providing we get together and do our homework. We want to change things by finding partners who share our vision, and to do that we need to create sustainable businesses. We view a partner as anyone who could get involved. …

In an interview with Paul Jacobson, you were talking about setting up community projects for people who don’t have access to computers, how are those going?

There’s been lots of development. I had the dinner with the head of the African Arts Centre. Our plan is that once all the systems are up and running, we could create other niche products.

We’re trying to get a weekend somewhere, where we could have lectures, and find designers who want to work with impoverished artists. We also want to work with people who are already established, and find a way to translate this art into the t-shirt medium.

…. I’ve spoken with the National Society of the Arts (NSA) - and in terms of their top ten artists of the year, we’d like to have the voting process and then go to print. At the end of the year we’d then like to exhibit these works at Buzzart - which is an exhibition of local designs.

Your Durban shop had to be shut down recently, which is a huge pity, but will you be investing in more stores or more retail sellers of your shirts?

Yes, it was a great store but we just had so many break-ins. We’re getting more into outlets. We can take this system to a company as large as Woolworths, and offer them a situation where consumers are telling you what they want. In the retail environment there’s no way to pre-buy and your risk is huge.

There is an enormous movement to get recurring South African designs. We’re currently in Big Blue, eSquared Cape Town and of course the Springleap website, where we ship to anyone anywhere in the world.

I have one final question which we ask everyone we interview..

Yes I am single and very handsome (laughs).

:) Well we could put that in too, but I was going to ask what your favourite blogs are to read.

I don’t have much time to read, but am going to have to say eSquared fashion . I also occasionally check in with Charl Norman, Imod, Eric Edelstein - the other half of springleap.com and Vinny Lingham.

This viral from Spike TV has achieved the good viral tri-fecta - it's immediately an in-joke for fans of the movies, is clearly a concept that we'd like to see executed in a few different ways and definitely leaves you chuckling.

Food manufacturers, Mars Incorporated, have recently launched a new viral campaign for their famous chocolate bar Snickers. In a series of videos, Mr. T urges us, in a manner which only Mr. T can, to “Get Some Nuts!”

They’ve done a really good job of reinventing the cult icon who is Mr. T, and merging the generation X bad ass action hero into a series of viral videos aimed at today’s modern online user.

In what I can only assume is the first in the series, our nutty hero, Mr. T prepares for war!

The next video shows Mr. T hitting the streets with his newly constructed weapon of choice and issuing a barrage of Mr T catch phrases and one-liners in an action sequence reminiscent of his most notable character, B.A. Baracus.

Even the music hints towards the A Team theme song …

…and finally, this ‘behind the scenes’ video of Mr. T dishing out his usual dose of ‘tude;

The Get Some Nuts site itself isn’t anything out of the ordinary, and features the expected branded wallpapers, mouse cursors, Facebook widgets, customised versions of the video (a la Elf Yourself) and Mr. T sound bytes.

However, the site is well stylised in a chocolate brown, trimmed with gold and brimming with humour - just like the man himself.
